Silhouettes of Sky - Qatar Airways Check-in Area at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
Today's trip brings me to the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), where I just arrived from Starlux's inaugural long-haul service into LAX from Taoyuan International Airport (TPE). I will be continuing my journey to Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH) onboard Qatar Airways' QSuite product onboard its A350-1000 aircraft. At over 8,000 miles, this is one of the longest routes in Qatar Airways' network.
Both Starlux's business class product and Qatar's QSuite are seriously good. Needless to say, I was extremely lucky to be able to fly on two of the very best business class products back to back.

Qatar Airways uses Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) here at LAX. TBIT serves as the central hub for most international long-haul flights at LAX, hosting airlines from all major global alliances.
I arrived relatively early, and there isn't a queue for business class check-in. I was able to get my boarding pass without any problems.
As Qatar Airways is part of the oneworld alliance, its Business Class passengers have access to the oneworld Los Angeles Business Lounge at LAX. The lounge is quite nice with a huge footprint, and offers various food and drinks selections, along with facilities such as shower.
Interestingly, despite its name, the lounge is not operated by the oneworld alliance itself, but jointly operated by a few oneworld airlines, namely Qantas, British Airways and Cathay Pacific.
The lounge can be accessed by passengers travelling on oneworld international Business / First Class, as well as oneworld Sapphire and Emerald status holders travelling on oneworld flights (except Alaska Mileage Plan or American AAdvantage status holders travelling on US domestic flights).

The Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) at LAX offers a delightful experience for transit and departures. The departure area is spacious, well-lit with loads of shops and restaurants.
These giant LED screens are implemented quite nicely IMO. They look visually stunning, not too flashy or intrusive, and add a modern touch to the overall ambiance.

The boarding lines are arranged by cabin class and elite status. The gates here at TBIT use facial recognition as the primary method for boarding verification without the need to scan physical or electronic boarding pass, which has become a growing trend in airports worldwide in recent years.
As of January 2025, Qatar Airways operates a fleet of 24 Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, with an additional 18 scheduled for delivery in the coming years. As the launch customer for both variants of the A350 family, Qatar Airways received its first A350-900 in 2015, followed by its first A350-1000 in 2018, as part of a total order for 76 A350 aircraft.
While Qatar Airways operates a diverse long-haul widebody fleet, including the 787, A350, 777, and A380, the differentiation in strategy among these aircraft types (aside from the A380, which features First Class) is not significant.

Today's ride (at the back) is A7-ANR, a 2020-built A350-1000 aircraft. It is purchased and owned by Qatar Airways, and is equipped with Rolls Royce Trent XWB-97 engines.
The aircraft in the front is Emirates' A380 aircraft A6-EUF.
Qatar Airways' A350-1000 aircraft are exclusively configured with the signature QSuite Business Class product. This strategic focus on a premium product underscores the A350-1000’s role as the airline’s flagship long-haul workhorse.
There are two different configurations with 24 and 46 Business Class seats respectively. Today's aircraft has the more premium 46J 281Y configuration.
Originally launched in 2017, the QSuite seat is manufactured by Collins Aerospace and was slowly being rolled out by Qatar Airways onto its widebody fleet, namely, the A350s and 777s following its debut.
In 2024, Qatar Airways unveiled the next evolution of this product - Qsuite Next Gen - at the Farnborough Airshow. This upgraded version is set to debut on the airline’s forthcoming Boeing 777X fleet, with entry into service anticipated by 2026.

Silhouettes of Sky - Qatar Airways A350-1000 Business Class Seat
The Qatar Airways A350-1000 aircraft cabin looks fantastic upon boarding; experiencing the QSuite for the first time is definitely a remarkable treat.
My first impression was overwhelmingly positive - the high privacy walls, the classic Qatar Airways purple accents, and just an overall bright and spacious interior. The seat itself also looks incredibly spacious.

I assigned myself seat 7K, a rear-facing window seat. Thanks to the staggered layout of QSuite, half of the seats face forward, while the other half face the rear.
All the true window seats (those closer to the window and farther from the aisle) are rear-facing, which, if you don't mind sitting backwards, are the best seats for solo travelers as they offer the most amount of privacy and the benefit of being next to the windows.
Although this was my first time sitting backward on a flight, I was totally okay with it. It felt a bit unusual during takeoff and landing. But once the aircraft starts cruising, I got used to it immediately and don't feel it anymore.
In fact, the slight upward tilt of the aircraft during cruise made the flat bed feel more natural and comfortable for sleeping when sitting backwards, as your feet won’t end up higher than your head when lying "flat".
There are a few products that have rear-facing seats that I know of:
The QSuite offers a 21.5 inch touchscreen IFE with great picture quality - among the best back in 2017 when QSuite first came out. Now 7 years later, there are already a few product that offers larger screens and higher resolution in Business Class. Nevertheless, the screen is still sufficiently large to enjoy a few movies onboard.
The seat offers 2x USB-A ports, a HDMI port, universal power port and an airplane 3-pin headphone jack, in addition to a IFE remote control. all within easy reach to the seat. Also, seat controls can also be conveniently found near the charging port.
The entertainment system onboard is branded as Oryx One, and it offers loads of movies and entertainment options, including live TV, which is great and will keep most entertained. One thing to note that, as a Middle-Eastern carrier, a lot of the contents are censored.
Individual air nozzles, two for each seat, in addition to the overhead reading light, can be found on the overhead panels.
Another reading light is located at the side of the seat.
Silhouettes of Sky - Qatar Airways A350-1000 Business Class Privacy Wall
One thing that the QSuite does absolutely the best is in privacy. The wall on the QSuite seat is so high and it create a true personal cubicle. When the door is closed, it’s very difficult to see anyone passing by. Even the cabin crew need to lean in closely over the partition to talk to passengers.
While more Business Class products now feature sliding doors, many fall short in delivering genuine improvements in privacy due to their smaller size and lower height. That is not the case with QSuite and I would say it still offers the highest level of privacy in any Business Class product in the market.
Several amenities are already waiting on the seat upon boarding, namely, two pillows with different softness and thickness, a very nice quality blanket and an amenity kit by Diptyque.
The amenity kit came with a paper box, as this flight departs from an outstation. For flights departing from Doha, a higher quality pouch will be offered with the same content. There are quite a lot of versions of the pouch, and I personally have received three different kinds from my flights on Qatar Airways.
Silhouettes of Sky - Qatar Airways A350-1000 Business Class Storage Space
On the side, a quite large storage space under the armrest area can be opened up. This space can be elevated to function as a comfortable armrest or lowered to create a smooth extension of the bed surface for added comfort.
Inside, you will find the air sickness bag, a bottle of water, as well as a pair of headphones.
Some additional amenities, including a set of pajama from The White Company, a Diptyque branded wet towel, as well as food and wine menu were distributed by the cabin crew. Also, a welcome drink was offered.
The pajama is of good quality, not the best in the market but does the job well enough. When it comes to wine, Qatar Airways offers one of the most impressive wine list in the industry with vintage champagne and various kinds of high quality wines and beverages.
Overall, the QSuite continues to offer best-in-class hardware, even as a product introduced seven years ago. An impressive level of vision and thoughtful innovation have went into the design of the product, setting a new standard that has greatly influenced the latest generation of premium cabin designs in the past few years.
As we were waiting for the boarding procedure to complete, a few aircraft has passed us, including an Korean Air 747-8 and an EVA Air 777-300ER in its classic livery. The EVA livery is quite retro - a lot of classic aviation livery elements.
Silhouettes of Sky - View of Western USA Landscape
Taking off facing the rear is a bit weird; but once cruising started it all felt normal.
Right after take off, we were treated with some stunning view of the mountain landscape of Western USA (I think this photo is around the area of Joshua Tree National Park).
Silhouettes of Sky - Qatar Airways A350-1000 Business Class Pre-Meal Snack Service
Shortly after take-off, the "main" meal service starts. Qatar Airways uses a dine-on-demand system where you can freely choose when and what to eat throughout the flight, so there isn't a set number of meal services like many other airlines.
Before take-off, the cabin crew checked whether I wanted to eat after take-off, and also took my order. For those who prefer to eat later during the flight, the cabin crew can reserve the dishes of your choice for later.
Before the meal, a pre-meal drinks and warm nuts service was offered.
Silhouettes of Sky - Qatar Airways A350-1000 Business Class Meal
As I was not too hungry, I opted to only have a main course for the meal service. Ordered a fish, not bad tasting overall, but clearly some of the vegetables are thawed then re-heated.
Qatar Airways does the dining experience proper though. Despite I only ordered one disk, it came with the full table set up with the butter plate, bread basket, cutleries, glasses and a candle.
Silhouettes of Sky - Qatar Airways A350-1000 Business Class Chocolate
Lastly, some Läderach chocolate before landing.
Overall, fantastic dining experiences with the dine-on-demand service, especially as many airlines are trying to cost cut in the Business Class cabin. Food quality range from good to great; drinks selection is among the best. Also, kudos to the cabin crew on this flight, who are super friendly and hard working.
As I was seated in the forward Business Class cabin, the lavatory is located in the front - a total of 3 lavatories are shared by the 46-seat Business Class cabin. The size is a bit larger than the standard lavatory size with some extra width, and are kept relatively clean. The lavatory also comes with a window.
Some basic Diptyque amenities are available, in addition to toothbrush and shavers.
Flying across the entire north hemisphere, through Canada, Greenland, and Europe, it was almost sunset at Doha, and I was treated with one of the most magnificent landings that I have ever experienced.
The approach took us along the east coast of Doha, flying pass several landmarks such as the Katara Tower, the Pearl Island and Doha's CBD area with the beautiful sunset glow in the background.
Silhouettes of Sky - Transit Area at Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH)
Because we arrived from the United States, we did not have to go through security check again at DOH - this is not always the case if arriving from other countries.
Doha is generally pleasant to transit through, but it can get quite chaotic during peak arrival and departure hours.
Silhouettes of Sky - The Orchard at Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH)
One of the main attraction in the airport is definitely The Orchard. Back when this trip happened in 2023, The Orchard has just opened, along with Qatar Airways' new Business Class lounge Al Mourjan Business Lounge – The Garden, which is right next to The Orchard.
The design of The Orchard really resembles Jewel at Singapore Changi Airport, and the similarities has spurred quite a lot of discussions back then.
Silhouettes of Sky - Qatar Airways A350-900 A7-AML at Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH)
After a short stay at the airport, time to board my connecting flight to Singapore. I will be sitting in Economy Class for this flight, and the flight is operated by an A350-900 aircraft with registration of A7-AML.
The Economy Class experience on Qatar Airways is generally good - seats are fairly standard for long-haul Economy, meals are decent, and an amenity kit with a few travel essentials was provided.
QSuite is an outstanding Business Class product overall. The seat itself ranks among the best-designed in the industry, and the dine-on-demand service offers passengers great flexibility with good quality dishes. Considering it was introduced as far back as 2017, QSuite truly showcases Qatar Airways’ forward thinking. Service on this particular flight was excellent, though it can vary - on later trips, I found some cabin crew to be noticeably less polished and professional, a well-known shortcoming for the Middle Eastern carrier.
Thank you for exploring this silhouette.
